Monnas part of superb rugby festival
The festival exposes them to the opportunity of playing the game at the highest level.
The quality of players representing their schools at each Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival is truly astounding.
All 12 participating schools at this year’s festival are renowned for their rugby pedigree and were among the top teams in the country at the end of last season. They are Grey College (Bloemfontein), Affies (Pretoria), Monument (Krugersdorp), EG Jansen (Boksburg), HTS Middelburg (Middelburg), Framesby High (Port Elizabeth), Nico Malan (Humansdorp), Selborne College (East London), Dale College (King William’s Town), with Glenwood, Westville and Kearsney College from KZN.
The festival exposes them to the opportunity of playing the game at the highest level.
More than 110 players from a range of schools have joined The Sharks Academy in the six years since the festival started; with many going on to play for provincial and national teams, such as the SA Sevens and SA U/20.
“The Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival attracts some of the top schoolboy players in South Africa. At last year’s Craven Week 70 players representing various provinces had played at the 2013 Kearsney Festival a few months earlier – a truly astounding statistic, particularly when you consider there are several other school rugby festivals on at the same time,” says Etienne Fynn, managing director of The Sharks Academy.
To illustrate the quality of players at Kearsney’s festival, he says that 14 of the 28 players selected for last year’s SA Schools squad had played at the 2013 festival.
This year talent scouts from The Sharks and Sharks Academy again will be watching the games on the three play days – Thursday 17, Saturday 19 and Monday 21 April – and at the end of the festival will award three bursaries each valued at over R100 000.
This includes a contract with the Academy, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.
