VIDEO: Parliament sitting for Nurses Day

Nurses Day celebrated with a touch humour.

Nursing staff at Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital took this year’s elections so much to heart that it became the central theme of their annual Nurses Day celebration.

Nurses Day traditionally is celebrated on 12 May worldwide, but it was celebrated on 13 May this year as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is considered widely to be the founder of modern nursing.

“Since the theme was announced ahead of the day, party leaders and representatives have been hard at work campaigning to convince the rest of the staff that they are deserving of their vote before they actually took the ballots,” says Staff Development Coordinator Paula van der Walt.

“Nine leaders of parties representing each of Netcare’s values appeared on the voting roll,” she says. These included Competence (MICU), Confidence (Constantia), Compassion (CTICU), Care (CC), Dignity (Paeds), Participation (RS), Truth (ED & Welt), Passion (NH) and Netcare Way (Theatre).

Wit and humour were the key words as the elections were concluded during a mock parliament sitting on Tuesday with Netcare staff member Melanie Pieterse as speaker.

“We had a good laugh, but in essence we used the occasion to show appreciation to all members of the nursing profession for their hard work, commitment and selfless dedication to our patients,” concludes Paula.
