Krugersdorp girl killed in hunting tragedy

Police are investigating after a 12-year-old girl from Krugersdorp was fatally shot during a hunting trip on a farm in the Free State.

A man has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old girl from Krugersdorp during a hunting trip at Franshoek Farm near Ficksburg in the Free State.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court.

According to Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, speaking on behalf of the office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Free State, the girl’s father and the man were hunting on the farm on the morning of May 29 when he allegedly discharged a firearm, fatally wounding the child.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment, but was declared dead on arrival at about 09:00.

Mophiring said hospital staff reported the incident to police, after which a murder case was opened.

As part of the investigation, all firearms belonging to the man were confiscated and will undergo forensic ballistic testing.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
