Municipal authorities say Magalies protestors finally are tamed

Protestors apparently took to the streets because they feared becoming homeless.

Spokesperson for the Mayor of Mogale City Nkosana Zali released a formal statement regarding a spate of protests in the Magaliesburg area recently.

According to Zali the protest action was fuelled by false rumours that a piece of land in Magaliesburg was purchased illegally and that those currently residing there would not be assisted to relocate once the transaction has been approved.

The land in question, according to Zali, is a farm by the name of Steenkoppie, which is 41 hectares in extent.

“Employees from the municipality engaged the residents and learnt that there were vicious rumours making the rounds within the community,” he says.

“The municipality since has taken steps to provide the community with proof of the legal land purchase by presenting them with formal documents,” he adds.

He also says Mogale City addressed the current occupants’ fears of not having anywhere to go after the land has been sold.

“We have agreed on a two-week period in which Mogale City will develop a process plan for the relocation when it occurs,” he says.

“The process will take into account an audit of the settlement, environmental impact assessment and other processes. We are happy to report that the situation is back to normal because the community is satisfied with the report,” he concludes.
