Women hounoured through sport

A kickboxing event was held to honour women on National Women's Day.

Nine kickboxing matches were held at Cedar Lodge this past Saturday (9 August) to honour women on National Women’s Day.

The day, which was hosted by the South African Professional Martial Arts Commission (Sapmac) with the help of several sponsors, would have seen more women taking part but due to unforeseen circumstances some of these participants had to withdraw, resulting in more male participants taking part.

Sapmac president Mosito Mphaphathi says it was the first kickboxing event to honour women and they are planning to have this type of event in August annually.

“This year we basically just tested the waters. For next year’s event we want to have about 90 per cent of the participants to be women.”

Although this year’s kickboxing event was successful, he is certain it could have attracted more spectators if the weather played along.

“Everyone I spoke with told me that they had lots of fun. We also consider having an event of this calibre every two months.”
