New principal for UniHigh

Although UniHigh has a more informal feel with smaller classes, it is a high school like any other.

The new principal at UniHigh believes the reason for this high school being different from the rest is because of the relationship he has with the pupils.

Elmo van Roon took over as principal at UniHigh in July and describes this chapter in his life as a new adventure.

Van Roon recently met with news editor Janine Viljoen about his plans for the school and his passion for teaching and education.

“To be an educator for me means to be someone who is willing to grow,” says Van Roon.

Having struggled a bit in school himself, Van Roon can associate with the difficulties pupils face when it comes to discipline in a public school.

Although UniHigh has a more informal feel with smaller classes, it is a high school like any other.

They cater for Grades 10 to 12 and has its first matric class this year.

Van Roon also is very hands-on when it comes to teaching.

“I taught the more technical subjects, as well as business and life orientation. My goal is to assist pupils and individuals who need more structure and guidance. Here at UniHigh we believe in walking together with pupils while they build on their education and future.”

The new principal, who seems to be quite comfortable in his new surrounds already, lives by the motto of Christian D Larson: “Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.”

Van Roon also uses this motto on the report cards of the pupils to help encourage them through their learning experiences.
