Krugersdorp teacher climbs Everest for rhinos

The goal of the climb is to raise over R100 000 for a very worthy cause.

Krugersdorp High School teacher Evangeline Scheepers embarked on the adventure of a lifetime.

On 22 September she departed to attempt climbing to the Mount Everest Base Camp.

She joins a group of students from the University of Pretoria as well as conservationists from all over South Africa.

The diverse group of climbers hopes to stand at the base of the mountain and make a bold statement against rhino poaching.

Their final destination is 5 545m above sea-level – a huge challenge as they will be confronted by ever-changing weather conditions and altitude sickness.

The goal of the climb is to raise over R100 000 for StopRhinoPoaching.com, which has earmarked Phinda Private Game Reserve to benefit from the fundraiser.

The fundraising includes doing the climb itself, as well as being involved with events held in the build-up to the climb.

All participants had to cover all their own expenses for the trip and all funds that has been raised will go directly towards rhino protection.

Scheepers and a colleague Bekkie Wasserman came up with a concept of a rhino badge. These badges were designed by Wasserman and sold to the pupils of Krugersdorp High School.

By doing this KHS has raised R10 600 towards the fight against rhino poaching.
