Local canoeists conquers the big Fish

Their race was uneventful, successfully shooting most of the major rapids, and a successful finish in a time of six hours 50 minutes over the two days.

Warren Mackenzie from Krugersdorp and his fellow club members managed to finish as the 50th K3 (three paddlers per boat) at the Hansa Fish River Marathon, where only 90 K3s in total finished the race.

The marathon took place on 10 and 11 October in Cradock in the Eastern Cape amid the usual gusty winds and mountain chill. Paddlers started at the Grassridge Dam, traversing a section of 80km of wild white water achieved by a guaranteed water release, as well as long sections of flat river and a number of boat breaking rapids.

The race also hosted the K3 SA Championships with more than 100 K3 boats lining up at the start of the race, including the Florida Lake Canoe Club groups.

Well done to Mackenzie and his team.
