Festive cheer for community projects

During these hand-over events friendships were formed and memories were made while more opportunities for further assistance in both these projects were created.

The news team together with a few women from the South African Breweries (SAB) Chamdor hub decided to spread a little Christmas cheer in Kagiso.

Around 85 less-fortunate residents each received a Christmas hamper worth R160.

Mavis Masigo, Sharon Noonan, Suzette Bissel, Cynthia Williams and Lerato Thaanyane, all admin ladies at the SAB, were key role players in making this partnership with the news a great success.

With fundraising initiatives hosted by these women throughout November, 65 gogos from the Kgoro Organisation for the Elderly in central Kagiso each received a Christmas hamper. Kgoro provides home-based care for the elderly of Kagiso. They also provide meals through their service centre to those who visit the organisation and they also present an Age in Action exercise programme for active seniors.

After handing out the hampers, the gogos rejoiced in praise and worship songs to show their appreciation to the women of the SAB.

Dawn and Carly Burnett from Mandlachem, one of SAB’s suppliers, were also there to witness the joyous occasion.

But that was not all.

SAB donated 15 of the hampers they collected to the news’ community project, to hand over to the members of the Lewisham Community Business Initiative (Lecobi) and a few very needy members of their immediate community.

Their generosity convinced the news also to host a fundraiser within their office and a further six hampers were collected. A total of 21 hampers were handed over to the committee of Lecobi and their community.

“It was such an overwhelmingly great feeling knowing that my colleagues and I, together with the amazing women from SAB could help make Christmas a little more special for these people from Kagiso,” said news editor Janine Viljoen.

During these hand-over events friendships were formed and memories were made while more opportunities for further assistance in both these projects were created.

Sharon would like to thank Dawn and Carly from Mandlachem as well as father and son Mario and Mario dos Santos from N&M Metal Works for their donations towards the projects.

“Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this a success,” said Sharon.
