SPCA refuse help from community

After blaming the community for not supporting them, the SPCA rejects an offer to help their last remaining animals to get adopted.

A local businesswoman from Krugersdorp offered to help the Krugersdorp SPCA since they are set to close their doors at the end of the month.

However, they simply refused her help and said no.

The owner of Hillside Pets, situated in President Square, wanted to host a special promotion where customers would be encourage to rather adopt one of the SPCA’s remaining animals up for adoption instead of buying a pet from them.

She went as far as organising free dog food to go with each adopted pet, but she was stopped in her tracks by the SPCA which, on more than one occasion, refused the help of the community.

Yet the SPCA has blamed the community of Krugersdorp for not supporting the branch.

Jolene Beyleveld, spokesperson for the Johannesburg SPCA had the following to say about the matter in a statement.

“The animals that come to our kennels are already stressed due to their circumstances and being in a strange environment, and we are not sure how they will react being among crowds of people in a shopping mall setting. We obviously do not want to place a possibly already stressed animal in an environment that will be detrimental to its own well-being and the people around him,” states Beyteveld.

She also explained the adopters would not be able to take the animals home immediately.

“There is no guarantee that they will get the animal as the property first must be checked by the inspectors. We would therefore prefer to have people visit our facilities to adopt.”

It would seem that the kindhearted members of the community’s hands are cut off as they watch the branch close it doors for good.
