According to protester David Maleka, he applied for a house in 1996 but claims the property was allocated to several other beneficiaries before him, despite meeting the qualifying criteria. He added that he has not received clarity on why his allocation has been delayed.
The protest follows the recent handover of units at the Dr Sefularo development, with many residents saying they are losing patience with the Mogale City Local Municipality and the provincial government.
The demonstration started at the Town Hall in the CBD before protesters marched to the department’s provincial offices in Krugersdorp.
Tensions escalated when some protesters attempted to enter the Human Settlements offices before security guards locked the doors.
March organiser Mawethu Mawethu later called for calm, urging demonstrators to remain civil despite their frustrations.
The demonstrators handed over a memorandum outlining their grievances. The Krugersdorp News will provide updates as more information becomes available.
