Making the (W)right jump
Maragon's athletics star jumps to new heights.
With endless hours in the gym and rehabilitating an injury this Maragon student jumps her way to the top of the athletic charts.
Michaela Wright, a Grade 10 pupil in Maragon High School, has always had a natural talent for athletics.
Although she always manages to perform well on school and district level, it would seem that when it got to the championship levels she would end up disappointed.
“Two years ago she didn’t even make it to the finals at Gauteng Championships because she has had so many injuries and because we are constantly in rehab with the injuries she never had enough time to train properly,” comments Belinda Espag, Marketing manager for the Maragon group.
The list of injuries continued when Michaela injured her hamstring on the first heat of the 100m sprint in last year’s athletics season.
Needless to say, Michaela had to go back into rehab to prepare herself and the injured hamstring for the new upcoming season this year.
“This season hasn’t been easy either as she still had problems with the hamstring. She started additional training and rehab together with her sprinting and it seems to have worked,” adds Belinda.
It would seem that natural talent, hard work and determination had finally paid off after she broke records and received gold.
She broke the long jump record of 5,45m with a 5,67m at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Championships where she took home the gold medal.
She took part in the 200m sprint at the CGA and came in fourth place and took fifth place in the 200m.
“This is all good considering she is taking part in an age group one year older than her this year,” concludes Michaela.
