Bloodbank recruiting donors

Did you know that one unit of blood can save three lives?

As we celebrate mothers this month, the South African National Blood Service urges the community to donate blood.

The SANBS bares the important task of recruiting healthy residents to become regular blood donors as there is always adequate blood collected and available to patients in need.

Did you know that 3 000 units of blood need to be collected every day nationally to ensure that the demand is met?

Even more interesting is that a unit consists of 480ml that a donor can donate at one blood donation and this one unit can save up to three lives.

“However simple this may read, it is often a difficult number to reach on most days, and this has a huge impact on the lives of patients,” says Vanessa Raju, communications manager of SANBS.

With the celebration of mothers and the role they play in the community this May, the SANBS states that mothers are among the highest users of blood for gynecologic and childbirth complications.

“This is just another reason for the community to become involved in the SANBS #3000unitsaday,” comments Raju.

Become a part of saving a live and donate blood if you are in good health and between the ages of 16 and 65. You must weigh more than 50kg, and should lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
