Students embrace wellness day

A local government department hosted a successful wellness day at a local community college.

It is not all fun and games at Westcol Krugersdorp but rather wellness and health to promote a more educated generation.

A wellness day was presented at the college’s Krugersdorp West campus on 14 and 15 May.

The wellness day is an initiative of Heaids (The Higher Education and Training HIV/ Aids programme) which was presented with the help of various non profit organisations in the community.

The day enabled students to test their blood sugar levels and blood pressure. HIV and TB testing were also available on the day.

The male students also had the opportunity to see a doctor about circumcision and discuss the health issue concerning the matter.

“The male students were very grateful for the opportunity to meet with a doctor on campus and discuss their health issues. Those interested will come in to contact with the doctor to make an appointment for circumcision surgery,” said Loraine van der Walt, Facilitator Student Support Services for Westcol Krugersdorp.

Before undergoing the nerve wracking HIV test, students received counselling to prepare them for the results.

Those who tested positive were sent for further counselling and treatment.

High blood pressure, sugar levels and TB were also identified at the wellness day and students were referred for applicable treatment.

Westcol hosts wellness health days twice a year and will present the second day later in September.
