Problem intersections in Krugersdorp
Which intersections leave motorists vulnerable for accidents due to the lack of visible road signs?
Two occupants of a Mercedes-Benz narrowly escaped an accident at a blind spot intersection in Monument, only to be hit by a taxi at the next stop.
The two occupants were travelling along Paul Kruger Road when the driver suddenly had to hit the breaks after a white bakkie dash in front of them in the direction of Jacob Mare Street. They stopped there and as they attempted to proceed up towards Paul Kruger, a taxi hit them head-on.
Emergency vehicles from Help24 along with local police were dispatched to the scene to take statements of those involved in the accident.
Luckily no-one was hurt in the accident except for the damage to both the taxi and Merc.
Chatting to residents who live on the doorstep of this intersection with a dangerous blind spot, the News got a better understanding of the significance of this road.
The road runs from a three-way stop street at the top (from Van Oord Street) down the hill to the bottom where it meets up with Memorial Avenue at a stop sign.
The problem intersection is where Jacob Mare meets Paul Kruger Drive with a stop sign.
Motorists who travel down this street have to take extra precaution when attempting to turn right into Jacob Mare to avoid oncoming traffic.
The residents whose driveways lead out into this road told the News that motorist frequently speed up this road, making it not only dangerous and sometimes impossible for them to pull out of their yards.
Another intersection that has been brought under the attention of the News is the intersection of Main Reef Road (Albertina Sisulu) and Chamdor Road, where the traffic light makes it difficult for motorist to pass in the short time it gives.
When the traffic light for the motorists heading towards the train bridge, from Chamdor’s side, turns red, anxious motorist risk driving over the red light in attempt to get over and not thinking about blocking the traffic for the motorists travelling on Main Reef, causing further delays and backed-up traffic.
