Eight free staycation ideas
Are you staying at home this school holiday? Don't worry, here are some activities that will keep you busy.

There is still 17 days left till school starts again.
Many of your friends are at the beach or fishing at Vaal Dam, but if you are at home this holiday you can still have just as much fun – for free!
Here are a few thing you can do with your time in an around Krugersdorp:
Donate Blood
Why not spend your free time changing lives? You can go to the South African National Blood Service’s Krugersdorp donor centre in Monument Shopping Centre. Remember that you need to be between 16 and 65 years old and weigh more than 50 kilograms to donate blood.
Visit the animals at Friends of Rescued Animals (Fora)
Everytime the News visits the animal shelter in Luipaardsvlei, we are enriched with love for the animals. What is better than to see the excited wag of a dog’s tail when you approach?
You can spend an entire day walking, feeding and bathing the dogs. Contact Fora on 082 336 5568 to find out how you can do this.
Cook for mom and dad
While not entirely free, most ingredients might already be in the kitchen cupboard. Now that you are at home, you can surprise mom and dad with a home made meal. Something simple like braaivleis, braaibroodjies and green salad will bring the family together. Ask dad to help you with the meat when he gets home so that he can teach you his braai secrets.
Volunteer at an organisation
Visit you nearest children’s home, elderly care or charity organisation and find out how you can help those in need in your community. Some charities simply need someone that can keep the elders or children company.
Pack a picnic basket
Use a basket in the kitchen or even your school bag to pack some snacks for a picnic at the nearest park. Coronation Dam welcomes many different people over the weekends. On Saturday and Sunday morning you can watch remote control speed boats soar across the water.
If you go to Monument Dam you don’t even have to pack a picnic, because Key West Shopping Centre is next to the dam.
Visit the Library
The Krugersdorp Central Library, on the corner of Von Brandis and Market Streets in town has literacy campaigns, study areas, computers with internet access, e-resources and help on hand. All this, plus of course, a great choice of books and e-books.
Is it school away from school? Maybe it’s a place where you don’t have to worry about your data running out.
Remember to bring along your ID book and proof of residence to open your library account.
Camp in the backyard
You don’t have to let the tent gather dust over the next 18 days. Get the whole family to join in and set up camp for the night in your back yard.
To make life a bit easier, don’t pack out too many things. You know mom is expecting you to clean it all up again.
Visit the Museum
The Mogale City Museum in Commissioner Street is set in the old Krugersdorp Court. If you would like to know more about Krugersdorp’s origins you will find it all at the Museum.
The Museum is currently holding an exhibition of artworks that was painted by Thusong Centre for the Mentally Challenged’s artists.
