Two schools compete for best debaters title

"Programmes such as this one are highly beneficial in reaching our long-term goals for these young pupils.”

Tsogo Sun annually supports an interschool debate and public speaking programme for the West Rand district.

This year the debate, which saw 80 pupils enter, ran from 7 May and culminated in a finals event on 29 July at Randfontein High School. Junior and senior teams of five, from Randfontein High School and Hoërskool Jan De Klerk, participated in the finals.

Following the analytical and thought-provoking debate between the finalists, a judging panel consisting of three district teachers and two Silverstar staff members, announced Randfontein High School the Tsogo Sun Interschool Debate and Public Speaking winners of the West Rand.

In support of this programme, Silverstar provided the catering for the final debate and sponsored the teams’ trophies, medals, certificates and prizes, which included dictionaries, backpacks and restaurant vouchers.

According to one of the pupils involved in the programme, debating has molded his friendships and conversations in everyday school life, “Debating is a passion of ours and it provides the platform for forging strong friendships with like-minded pupils. Our breaks often are spent in the Debating Chambers to spend time engaging in political conversation or to analyse trending social media issues.”

Shane Collinson, director of operations and complex general manager at Silverstar said, “It is veryy important for Silverstar to be involved in our children’s educational development. It is our obligation to provide the necessary support structures, which upskill the youth who eventually will be leaders of our communities. Programmes such as this one are highly beneficial in reaching our long-term goals for these young pupils.”
