The legacy of spotless Spot

"Beer is basically hygiene, temperature, time and a whole lot of loving."

In the beautiful landscape of the Magaliesberg mountains area, something good is brewing.

During a casual Saturday morning drive into the countryside the News saw a sign at the roadside that just had to be investigated. It was a drawing of a white dog relieving itself straight onto an electric socket, with some wording underneath.

Roeks Griessel, the owner of the establishment the sign is about, with his wife Lauran opened The White Dog self-service pub and restaurant in August.

Chatting to Roeks, the News learned about their love of their late Jack Russel, (spotless) Spot that inspired them when naming the venue and designing the logo.

“Despite Spot being a female, she used to lift her leg like a male dog,” he laughed.

With a passion for beer and a knack of brewing, Roeks started making beer in his own back-yard mini brewery in 2007 – mainly for personal consumption. A year later he started selling the product he named after himself.

He claimed the secret to his refreshing beer is that it is handcrafted and brewed with the purest water unique to the Magalies area.

“Beer is basically hygiene, temperature, time and a whole lot of love. You need to have a passion for beer to make it work,” he stated.

It is not hard to imagine a very proud Spot giving Roeks and Lauran the nod for making his legacy live on.
