Learning made fun with mud

Edible mud helps pupils learn about the Earth.

Recently the pupils of Maragon Avianto’s Grade 000 and 00’s embarked on various projects that embody many aspects of learning.

“It did not take much to motivate the children – just a small provocation, little skill building and some support,” Maragon’s Marketing Manager, Belinda Espag, said.

As the pupils created their own unique wonderful bugs using clay, they communicated with each other, shared ideas and solved problems.

The children discovered the process of making their clay bugs was more important than the outcome and that everyone was entitled to make their own choices and decisions.

“I know that once the clay has been processed and painted the children will be even more delighted and proud of what they have made,” Belinda explained.

Another interesting project for both the Grade 000 and 00 pupils was a study of the four elements.

Teachers involved worked together closely to reinforce the children’s understanding of the elements of Earth with an exciting plan.

The pupils along with teachers set outdoors to feel, manipulate and study soil and participate in a number of fun activities revolving around the soil.

Finally the pupils were allowed to play with mud and to the children’s surprise this was edible mud pies.

“Of course making the ‘Mud’ proved to be a lot of fun. The pupils were provided with all the required ingredients and then it was explained step-by-step what they had to do. Many skills were involved and the pupils had to follow a sequence of events, communicate with others, measure quantities, mix ingredients, assemble their products, taste for quality assurance, count and add worms and finally eat what they had made. Ultimately, a lot of fun was had by all and without anyone realising how much they had actually learnt.”
