Warning: ATM scamsters strike again

ATM scamsters on the prowl as the festive season kicks off.

ATM users are warned to be very vigilant this festive season as yet another resident fell pray to scamsters last week.

Tanya van der Westhuizen wanted to quickly withdraw money from the FNB ATM in Witpoortjie when she was approached by a suspect who ‘tried’ to help her with the transaction.

She claims she was standing in the queue to withdraw money with two other people in front of her, who seemed to be struggling with withdrawing money.

When it was finally Van der Westhuizen’s turn to make use of the ATM she noticed the machine did not want to take her card.

“There is something wrong with the machine,” the man, who was standing in front of her in the queue, said to her.

He then took the card from her and inserted the card in a downwards position into the ATM and pressed cancel.

Next he instructed Van der Westhuizen to type in her cellphone number on which she refused.

She tried to press in the pin when the man disappeared.

After the machine was not responding, Van der Westhuizen pressed the cancel button a number of times without any luck.

The person behind her in the queue then asked if she could try and withdraw money when Van der Westhuizen realised that the card had disappeared.

In a matter of minutes she received her first sms stating that R3 000 had been withdrawn from her account.

On arrival at the bank to report the incident, a second sms alerted her that a further R2 700 was withdrawn from another shopping center.

Van der Westhuizen has since reported the incident to the bank and the local CPF which claims they are aware of a suspect matching her description making the rounds in the area.
