Brothers making their mark in motocross

Motorcross stars Mark and Nicolas Phelps are flying the South African flag high in the USA.

Mark Phelps, 15, is still flying the South African flag high overseas in motocross.

Mark, along with his brother Nicholas, is making it big in the motocross sport industry. Mark has been living in the USA for the past 12 months.

His latest achievement includes a ninth place in the Monster Energy Cup, which was hosted in Las Vegas.

Mark described it as the most exciting event of his career. He currently trains at the Milsaps training facility in Southern Georgia and has decided to concentrate on the large national events.

“The crowd and the atmosphere were an experience of a lifetime. My mental and physical preparation could have been better as I felt I was not equipped well enough and this resulted in me achieving a ninth position overall,” Mark said about his first Supercross event.

He described the Supercross track style as unfamiliar and uncomfortable in the beginning. He said it took him all three qualifying sessions to get up to race pace.

“Sometimes it’s tough to be away from my family but in order to chase your dream, you sometimes need to give up things you love,” Mark said in an interview with a US sports magazine.

For the next 12 months Mark will be racing in the School Boy 1 and 2 division events and will focus on achieving his goals.

“Mark also recently took part in three motocross events, which is an annual week-long festival held at Gatorback Cycle Park, called the Mini Os or Thor MX Winter Olympics. Nicholas also is doing well in the 250 class, managing 10th place in his first race.

Nick and Mark have qualified for two events. Nick will be riding a 250cc motorbike and Mark a 125cc,” said their proud grandfather, Len Phelps.
