[VIDEO] Five classes full of future leaders
All ready and set to go at Monument Primary.
“Grade one is the absolute foundation of who you will become. It is where you learn to read, write and do mathematics. It will prepare you for the rest of your life,” Monument Primary School teacher Tonia du Plessis said.
These words rang true in many Krugersdorp primary schools this morning when thousands of Grade one pupils made their way to the ‘big school’.
Some greet this next step with joy and excitement and others with a little fear. But teachers like Tonia are ready for anything, because they have seen it all.
“By the end of the day you will know who is an introvert and who are talkers. I will also know all their names,” she said.
Monument Primary prepared for about 160 Grade one pupils, divided into five classes. According to the principal, Mark Moore, the school also has two new teachers for Grade two and Grade three classes.
“And we have a set of twins in Grade one,” Mark added.
As class started Tonia introduced herself and immediately gave the Grade one B class a bit of work to do. While handing out white sheets of papers, she had the class sing along to a newly learned song.
“The first three days are crucial,” she said.
“You have to set rules and boundaries initially and then you can let them be.”
Mark said that even though the hail storm that hit Krugersdorp the previous weekend set the preparations back a bit, ” we got everything sorted.”
By the time the Grade ones packed their schoolbags for the first time, their desks, marked wit their name, were already waiting for them.
