Stock theft increases, again

Police are once again warning of an increase in stock theft.

Over recent weeks, the Magaliesburg area has seen an increase in stock theft.

“Sheep are stolen on a regular basis,” police spokesperson, Constable Rebecca Phithi said.

“Cases are opened but it is a difficult crime to police since the suspect could be anyone,” she said.

Magaliesburg’s police are relying entirely on community information and pleads to residents to inform them of any illegal activity they might know of.

The Station commander of Magaliesburg, Lieutenant Colonel Joyce Julla, said that any information regarding crimes in the policing district, including housebreaking and theft, will be highly appreciated.

“If a member of the community wants to remain anonymous there are many ways in providing information. Utilise the Crime Stop line 08600 10111 or 10111,” Phithi added.

“Otherwise you can directly communicate with the Station Commander by visiting her office. Information can also be given to the Branch Commander of the Detectives, Lieutenant Motau, or the Visible Policing Commander, Captain Van Rooyen.”

Constable Lucky Matome, a police spokesperson, lists these tips as measures that need to be taken to protect your animals, and investments, from being stolen from your plot or farm:

1. Brand or tag your stock.

“If we find cattle that has been stolen, we have no evidence to prove it. Unless the animals have been branded by their owner,” Matome explained.

2. Fence off your animals.

3. Accumulate basic employee information.

According to Matome, farm owners, who are often casual worker employers, should have basic information like addresses and contact numbers of their employees. It eliminates possible suspects and makes the investigation for police offers much easier.

4. Get involved with community safety.

5. Employ a night guard.

If you are suspected to be in possession of stolen good or stock, Matome explained that punishment of imprisonment and a hefty fine can be expected of you if you are indeed found guilty.
