Cable thief caught red-handed

The suspect was caught with the cable in his bag.

A man was arrested by Magaliesburg police after he stole a newly installed telecommunications cable.

Shortly after a new Telkom cable line was installed in Magaliesburg, the 29-year-old man cut it off and planned on selling it.

“The suspect allegedly observed members of Telkom busy installing new cable and he saw an opportunity to commit a crime. He cut and removed the newly installed cable and was on his way to sell it at a scrap yard, when he was stopped in his tracks,” police spokesperson, Constable Rebecca Phithi said.

Members of the Magaliesburg Crime Prevention unit stopped and searched the man on 26 January and saw that he was carrying the stolen cable in a bag.

“Upon finding the property the members asked the cable installation team who confirmed that the cable was indeed property of Telkom,” she said.

The suspect will appear in court facing charges of possession of stolen property and malicious damage to property.

The Magaliesburg Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joyce Julla, congratulated the stop and search operations in the area.

“Their observation resulted in the arrest and the recovery of the stolen property shortly after the crime was committed,” she said.
