Share your own Krugersdorp stories

Leon Gork shares his memories of growing up in Krugersdorp.

Old Krugersdorper, Leon Gork, is keeping the memory of Krugersdorp alive for future generations.

In 2012 he created a Facebook group dedicated to telling stories about the city and the people who lived there in his youth, from his own experience and memory.

Named Stories of Krugersdorp, this platform allows old and current members of the community to share their memories of the city with pictures and stories, or learn about the history of their neighbourhood.

The group has grown to more than 3 000 members.

When asked how the idea for the page came about, he said, “I encountered many people, all over the world who once lived in Krugersdorp. I thought it would be interesting to hear stories about their lives. I enjoy telling stories about my life here and I thought others would like to tell their stories also. Now anybody with a Facebook profile can visit the page, write stories there, post pictures and comment.

“I hope more people will share their stories and I hope to write many more stories of my life. As a child I admired many people in Krugersdorp, they were my heroes,” Leon said.

Leon encouraged other members of the Krugersdorp community to share their stories and pictures.

He said everyone is welcome.

“I am a bit disappointing that people who I respected haven’t shared their stories. I think that besides myself, there are only half a dozen others who have written stories. I would love to read more stories,” he said.
