Two men stoned to death
Two bodies were found in an open field following a raid operation which ignited into a protest.
Hours after a successful raid operation by local police’s Vispol (Visible Policing) unit in West Village, police were called out again after two bodies were found near the railway tracks.
At around 8pm last night, 8 March, police arrived at the scene near the railway track running past the Makhulugama informal settlement where two men were found, allegedly stoned to death.
The two unknown men were found about three metres apart lying in an open field with stones scattered around them. Police believe the men were killed in a mob justice attack.
They are believed to be between the ages of 25 and 30. The incident happened not far from where police confiscated illegal mining equipment known as ‘pendukas’ earlier during the day.
It is believed the raid operation by police ignited residents to start protesting later that afternoon.
“The community started burning tyres and blocking the road. Later the situation was calm and the protesters were dispersed,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.
The area is known for its illegal miners who are often connected to the Zama-Zama illegal mining movement who is involved in many mob justice incidents.
“We are appealing to the community to assist the police with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspect/s involved in this matter.”
The deceased men have since been identified. A case of double murder has been opened at the Krugersdorp police station.
