[PHOTOS] Another successful Shavathon
Students embark on a Shavathon in aid of cancer awareness and support.
UniHigh recently held their annual Shavathon in aid of cancer awareness at their campus in Clew Street on 4 March.
“We had students shave off and colour spraying other students’ heads,” Natalie Franklin, UniHigh’s marketing manager, said.
From noon students had either all or parts of their hair shaved off for R25 each. On the day, R800 was donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Krugersdorp by the students.
Angelique van der Riel’s father is a cancer survivor and she shaved her head in honour of his victory. Francois Dreyer, on the other hand, said he loved his hair too much and decided to spray it instead.
“This is a very successful fifth year of UniHigh’s Shavathon,” Natalie added.

Cansa’s Shavathon is a national fundraiser held across the country until 31 March. The Shavathon is one of South Africa’s famous events in support of a worthy cause, by showing solidarity with those affected by cancer.
“Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy, so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors,” Cansa’s Shavathon website reads.
Colouring your hair or paying a Bail Out Fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave off their hair.
