Two suspects were arrested earlier this week for allegedly kidnapping a foreign national while impersonating the police.
The two suspects, both 33-years-old, were arrested in Rietvallei at around 10pm on 14 March by Kagiso police.
“The complainant alleged that he was at his shop in Rietvallei when a suspect entered and identified himself as a police official on 13 March at around 8pm. The suspect then demanded to see the complainant’s asylum papers; his official documents to be in the country,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya explained.
As the complainant produced the documents, another suspect appeared and rejected the papers as being fraudulent.
“They thereafter ordered the complainant to close the shop so they could go to Kagiso Police station to fix the problem.”
They all left in the suspect’s vehicle and went to nearby sports grounds instead of the station.
On arrival at the sports grounds they demanded an amount of R3 000 from the complainant to ‘fix’ his problem.
The complainant then phoned and informed his brother to meet at the Rietvallei intersection.
“When his brother phoned the suspects back to meet at Kagiso police station, they changed their story and claimed that they were actually from Randfontein SAPS. The brother became suspicious and agreed to the arrangements but instead informed the Kagiso police.”
The suspects were arrested and later detained at the Kagiso police station where a case docket of kidnapping was registered.
They have already made their first appearance in court.
“We advise people not to believe anyone who identify themselves as a police official without even producing an appointment card. If you are not convinced or are unsure, rather call the sector police and verify or call Saps’ Crime Stop,” Sibiya concluded.
