Suspects could be on the loose after a man was robbed at an ATM recently.
On the afternoon of 14 March, Nadia Colyn posted on Facebook that her husband had been robbed at an ATM in Rustenburg Road.
“Remember, money can’t buy you happiness,” she has said.
Nadia said the suspects distracted her husband and took the money that he withdrew. The News understands that he was not injured.
“My husband says that there was a man standing at the ATM next to him, although he would not be able to recognize him again as he did not really take notice, and he can only assume that it was this guy as it all happened so fast.”
Many commented on her post, some saying that they too had been robbed or nearly fell victim to a robbery at the same ATM.
The News learned that ATM robbers are becoming common in the area and that the suspects normally keep a watchful eye on possible victims from a parked car.
By speaking to surrounding business owners, the News learned that the specific ATM has a history of frequent robberies.
According to police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, a case had not been opened at the Krugersdorp police station, but she urges victims to do so.
“We have a better chance of arresting suspects if more cases are opened,” she said. Mashale explained that a lot of the time where no security services are provided close to an ATM, these are targeted.
Nadia however said that even though there is possible footage of the robbery, she does not have much hope that something will come of it if she obtains the footage.
“My handbag was grabbed in September. When we opened a case, we were told that nothing might come of it even though you could see their faces on the footage,” she said.
