Police stumped by Azaadville killings

After a school teacher was murdered in Azaadville during the early morning hours on Tuesday (15 March) and police are appealing to members of the community to assist with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects.

The deceased was a teacher in Azaadville for many years and also taught at a local college.

The 50-year-old father of seven was killed in a struggle with two allegedly armed suspects during which shots were fired at him and his son.

“It is alleged that at about 2am the victim and his son was shot at in Abdul Hassen Crescent ,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

Sibiya said according to the son, the family was asleep when the two men entered their house and “started shooting”.

“The 50-year-old male sustained several gunshot wounds, while his son was hit in the back of his upper body. The suspects allegedly only took two cellphones and fled the scene,” he said.

The injured son was transported to and treated at the local hospital.

In another related incident, a father and his son were shot at in Azaadville on 3 March. The father, activist Haroon Saleh, was killed and his son passed away a few hours later. Police are also still investigating the case.

Azaadville Community Policing Forum chairperson, Shabier Dabhelia, told the News that the teacher’s murder would be the third death in less than two weeks. Before Saleh’s and his son’s murder, the Azaadville community last had seen a murder three years ago.
