A 25-year-old suspect was arrested at a spaza shop in Rietvallei for using a fake note earlier this week.
The suspect entered the spaza shop when he produced a R200 note to pay for two items at a shop in Rietvallei on 16 March.
“The complainant alleged that the suspect arrived at his shop at around 8.55pm. As the suspect left the shop the complainant immediately noticed that he gave him a fake note,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Solomon Sibiya, said.
The complainant immediately screamed for help to alert some of his customers who were standing around the shop.
“They all gave chase after the suspect and managed to catch him with the items still in his possession.”
The members of the community arrested him and later handed the suspect over to the police with minor injuries.
Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, station commander of Kagiso police praised members of the community of Rietvallei for acting responsibly by arresting the suspect and most importantly for not taking law into their hands.
“Foreign nationals, especially those who owns spaza shops, who help some people during rainy days must be protected from unfair treatment and exploitation by residents they live with,” the Brigadier added.
