A house breaking suspect was handed over to the police after the community got a hold of him and placed him under citizen arrest.
Kagiso police arrested the 27-year-old suspect in Kagiso Extension 6 after he was handed over by members of the community on 22 March.
The complainant allegedly left for work at about 9.40am when he received a complaint from his wife about an incident at their home.
He then rushed home and upon arrival he found that his safe containing cash was stolen.
“The suspect broke the door and burglar bars to gain entry into the property. The neighbours allegedly chased the suspect and managed to apprehend him. They then called the police and handed him over with stolen items,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.
The suspect was later detained at Kagiso police station where a case docket of house breaking and theft was opened.
He has already made a brief appearance in court.
“If we all can be the ears and eyes of each other in our areas, life can be difficult for criminals. Let us work together with the police and not take law into our hands. I like the manner in which the residents of Extension 6 have handled this,” Kagiso Police Station Commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane said.
