Ward 21 pair assist elderly voters to cast ballots in Noordheuwel

Community members step in to ferry frail care residents to a neighbouring tent voting station after special voting days lapsed.

Two Ward 21 residents have dedicated their time to assist elderly voters to reach their voting station.

This voting station is located in a tent on Swanevelder Street next to Panorama Estates.

Ockert Bouwer and Etienne Hattingh have been helping mostly elderly residents today to ensure they experience a smooth Election Day.

Bouwer and Hattingh stepped in after several voters, mainly from Panorama Estates, could not cast special votes earlier this week. The two residents are therefore ensuring they still have an opportunity to cast their ballots as the day progresses.

According to Panorama Estates caretaker Mapeseka Koole, the facility has more than 600 units and houses more than 1 500 elderly residents.

“Some residents here are unable to transport themselves to the voting station. For our bedridden elders, we are working extra hard and carefully to ensure that they do not miss their opportunity,” said Koole.

Bouwer said their support extends beyond transport, ensuring voters also have their essential identity documents on hand.
