The quick response of a vigilant shop assistant led to the arrest of a 27-year-old woman.
The suspect was arrested after the shop assistant became suspicious when the woman produced someone else’s ID to upgrade a cellphone at a cellphone shop in Kagiso.
“The complainant alleged the suspect arrived at the shop to upgrade her cell phone. The suspect then produced an ID belonging to someone else and the required amount to upgrade,” Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya of the Kagiso Police explained.
When the shop assistant became suspicious she informed the manager who immediately called the police.
Police responded and the suspect was arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station where a case docket of fraud was opened. The suspect has made a brief appearance in court.
“It is good that most sectors of the community are showing interest in working with the police. A number of fraud cases were reported previously where people’s ID books were used without their consent. We urge financial institutions and shops to be more vigilant and cautious every time they render services to members of the public where an ID document is used. They can play a vital and significant role in ensuring that people using others’ personal documents to commit fraud are arrested,” Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, Kagiso Police Station commander said.
