Grandparents chase after would-be car thieves
Grandparents who usually meet their children and grandchildren after church on Sundays instead interrupted suspects breaking into a vehicle.
While a congregation was enjoying their Sunday church service, a silver VW Polo occupied with two suspects stopped in Sarel Cilliers Street in Monument just before 11am yesterday, with other ideas in mind.
On the scene the News learned the vehicle with the suspicious occupants were driving slowly up and down the street to make sure the coast was clear.
One of the suspects then proceeded to another silver Polo which was parked near the church in the street. The suspect used a monkey wrench to gain entry to the vehicle.
What the suspects did not know was that the owners of the vehicle’s parents usually meet them every Sunday after church.
As the grandparents arrived at the church, they stopped behind the vehicle and were surprised to find someone seated in the vehicle and noticed that the church’s service was not yet done.
The grandmother walked to the vehicle to greet who she thought was her son but was surprised by the one suspect.
The suspect instructed her to return to her vehicle and minutes later made a run for it towards the getaway car.
The suspects fled down Paul Kruger Drive and the grandparents decided to chase after them.
They returned later and contacted the police who arrived shortly after.
Upon their return they noticed the vehicle’s ignition was stripped and the car was reversed a few metres by the suspects before they were interrupted.
A case of malicious damage to property has been opened at the Krugersdorp Police.
The owner of the vehicle said that she was relieved the vehicle was not stolen and are grateful that her in-laws are safe.
