Couple’s fight turns into alleged hostage situation

Backup was requested after an argument quickly escalated between a Noordheuwel couple last night.

An alert for assistance was sent out on a community emergency group on WhatsApp after an alleged hostage situation took place in Noordheuwel late last night.

It is believed the alleged hostage situation had a domestic violence nature after an argument between a couple quickly escalated at around 11pm last night, 11 April.

Unverified reports stated the woman was ‘held hostage’ inside the house at knife point by her former partner.

This could however not be verified as the incident was later reported as a domestic violence dispute.

The police were deployed to the house where they met up with the couple.

A sensitive approach by police defused the situation and officers were able to peacefully step in and control the situation.

The man was later arrested after the woman opened a case of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and malicious damage to property (MDP) against the man.

The incident has been confirmed by Krugersdorp police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale.

“SAPS were called to the scene where the complainant alleged that her ex-boyfriend came to her home and started arguing with her. It is alleged that the suspect requested her to open the door and when she refused, he broke the window and assaulted her,” Mashale said in the statement.

The suspect is due to appear in court on the above mentioned charges.
