Housing project a R29m dumping site
The DA believes in pursuing democratic processes to resolve this longstanding matter.
According to Lebo More, the DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Petitions, the delayed Munsieville extension 5 housing project is one of the most visible failures of housing delivery in Gauteng.
The DA will write to the Human Settlements MEC, Paul Mashatile, following an oversight visit to the project on 12 April, which revealed that it remains incomplete for more than five years.
“The site allocated for construction currently lies bare and has become a dumping site. Thousands of Munsieville residents are in desperate need of almost 500 houses which were promised by the Gauteng government,” More said.
In a written response to a DA question on the project, MEC Mashatile indicated that construction should have commenced in February this year.
“MEC Mashatile’s response also indicates that he has no clue of the real state of affairs regarding this housing project.”
This community of Munsieville have recently experienced violent service delivery protests.
The DA believes in pursuing democratic processes to resolve this longstanding matter and will be working together with the community of Munsieville to forward a petition to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
“I challenge the MEC to personally conduct an oversight visit to see the true plight of the people of Munsieville who have been denied their right to housing.”
