Aiming for the Big Apple
This local performer was named overall winner at the National Talent Africa Competition and is now on her way to New York City.
A local vocalist has her goals set, after winning the National Talent Africa Competition, on making an impression at the Talent America Competition in New York City in July.
On Good Friday (25 March), 18-year-old Jessica de Wet showed the Talent Africa judges what she is made of. She sang ten songs, Alive by Sia and Addicted by Avici to name a few, and won the first place for performers aged between 9 and 19, she was named the overall winning vocalist and, what she is most proud on, the overall competition winner.
Talent Africa is a national talent competition for performing artists. Dancers, singers, instrumentalists, actors and models all took to the stage at the Roodepoort Theater during the last week of March to battle for a place in the national team that will represent South Africa in New York in July.
But the singer’s mother, Lisa de Wet, said Jessica’s voice was not always award-winning.
“When she was younger, she would sing everyday, everywhere. But when we took her for singing lessons, her voice bloomed,” she said.
Jessica has also been crowned Miss Noordheuwel but aims to take to the international stage for her vocals.
“This is my dream, I have always wanted to be a singer,” she said.
Jessica said she would not have made it this far without the support of her parents, relatives, grandparents and her vocal coach, André Martinez.
“He saw talent in me and he continues to push me so that I can grow as an artists,” Jessica said.
Jessica will join thousands of acts in July when she puts her talents to the test in the city that never sleeps. She hopes to find a performing arts scholarship so that she can continue to live her dream every day.
