Two thieves got schooled by a vigilant security guard after stealing more than a handful of books at a shop in Noordeuwel earlier this afternoon.
One suspect went into the bookshop at the Noordheuwel Shopping Center on Robert Broom Drive and started helping himself to a couple of books.
The guard noticed the suspiciously looking shopper and kept his eyes on him. A few minutes later the suspect walked out of the shop and had an unusual bulge around his waist.

The suspect then went to the Toyota Corolla parked in the parking area to offload and quickly returned for more.
This time the suspect asked the shop assistants about study guide books.
The suspect then carefully filled up his pants again with books as he kept a watchful eye over the busy shop assistants who were in the front of the shop.
As he made his way to the getaway vehicle for the second time, the security guard followed him and stopped him.
“Sorry can you stop I want to ask you a question,” on which the suspect first replied no.
He then later offered the security guard money to turn a blind eye who then rather called for back up.

As the suspects attempted to getaway, the guard smashed the vehicle’s windscreen and a fight erupted between the guard and one of the suspect.
The scuffle got somewhat out of hand as all the windows of the vehicle were broken in the process.
Patrollers from the Sector 7 Community Policing Forum were also called for back up who, with the help of more security guards, placed the driver of the vehicle and the passenger under citizen arrest.
The police were called to the scene where both the suspects were handed over.

The suspect managed to steal over 10 books which included two study guides.
As curious bystanders and shoppers stood in crowds to get a glimpse of the incident, a motorist drove past the bruised and bleeding suspects sitting next to their wrecked vehicle and yelled from his vehicle, “Lekker man!”.
