Accused sentenced to total of 72 years

He will be behind bars for 42 and 30 years respectively.

A local detective has secured the conviction of a 41-year-old man after he was charged with, among others, kidnapping and attempted rape, four years ago.

Detective Sergeant Helms Simali secured a combined 72 years imprisonment for April Mongale Motlabi who was arrested in Matshelapad informal settlement in Tarlton.

“He was sentenced to 42 and 30 years imprisonment respectively,” police spokesperson, Constable Rebecca Phithi said.

He was accused of housebreaking, theft, robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, kidnapping and attempted rape.

Motlabi’s brother was also arrested on similar charges in Welkom, but died while in police custody. The circumstances surrounding his death was not made clear.

Phithi said that the accused was sentenced in the Protea Court in Soweto.

The Magaliesburg Police Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joyce Julla said Simali is a dedicated detective and his hard work had paid off. The detective had previously been awarded with numerous cluster, provincial and national detective awards.
