PHOTOS Queen for a day

A group of young girls with life-threatening illnesses were crowned as queens and pampered five-star style.

Every little girl dreams of being a beauty queen, even if she suffers from a life-threatening illness.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation understands this and once again helped their Dream Children to become queens.

On Saturday (23 April) a group of young girls from Pretoria who spend most of their time battling obstacles such as cancer in hospital, were pampered and crowned Queen for a Day at Garden World‘s Little Princess Spa.

“The purpose of this project is to take our brave girls out of the hospital and crown them Queen for a Day,” said Chanelle Pienaar, the Pretoria Reach for a Dream project coordinator.

“We want to shower each girl with positive attention and help them creative positive memories that will help them through the tough times they are faced with due to their illness,” she said.

And shower they did. From pedicures and manicures to facials and professional make-up, the young fighters truly believed they were queens. Izelle van Vuuren, Junior Miss Teen SA and finalist in the Miss United Continents South Africa beauty pageant, crowned each girl with a tiara and put sashes round them after they had strutted their stuff on the runway. Lizz Meiring was there as well to make the girls laugh.

Izelle explained how the experience helps these girls, who may feel embarrassed by their appearance as a result of their illness or treatment, to gain confidence and improve their self-esteem.

“Just because they are not well, doesn’t mean they are not beautiful,” Chanelle said.
