[VIDEO] Hijacked and held for hours
The driver was held up for hours after being released in Soweto.
After making a routine delivery in Noordheuwel, 31-year-old driver Daniel Makgopela was hijacked, by three men he thought to be police officers, and released hours later in Soweto.
“They flashed their headlights at me while I was driving. They wore reflective jackets and I thought they were police officers. So I stopped to talk to them,” Daniel told the News.
Daniel said he opened his window to talk to one of the men when another came around the other side of the branded bakkie. When he turned to talk to the man, he was hit over the head with a gun.
“I was shoved to the passenger seat where they drove off with me for about 45 minutes. We arrived at a house where they had me tied up for two hours,” he remembered.
After numerous missed calls from his employer, Daniel’s cell phone and wallet were also taken by the attackers.
“They made a call to an apparent dealer and asked him for R10 000 for the bakkie,” he said.
The suspects then ordered Daniel into another car where they drove for another 30 minutes.
“I remember them saying that they saw a road block and turned off into a gravel road.”
After hours of being held up, Daniel was eventually let go somewhere in Orlando, Soweto. He made his way to a house where he asked to be escorted to the nearest police station.
Daniel has opened a case at the Krugersdorp police station, but struggles to sleep every night.
“Every morning around 3am I wake up. I am frightened,” he said.
Daniel was also attacked by armed robbers in his home a few weeks prior to the hijacking incident.
An employee of the company Daniel works for said she never expected hijackers to steal a branded vehicle.
