The announcement was made at Silverstar Casino after this year's finalists were named.

The 18 South African Bachelor and Bachelorette finalists have been announced at Silverstar Casino, but a surprise awaited the contestants.

Nine of this year’s finalists were chosen from the contestants who were previous finalists and semi-finalists.

The sixth annual SA Bachelor and Bachelorette finalists were announced on Wednesday (27 April) along with the surprise newly added All Stars (previous contestants) versus New Stars (this year’s finalists) element to the competition. This is a first for the competition.

The competition, launched by Copperstone Promotions, aims to find South Africa’s most eligible bachelor and bachelorette. These candidates must be older than 20, single and actively involved with a charity they wish to fully support and create awareness for.

Since it began, the competition has raised more than R650 000 for various charities.

This year, the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is once again the main chosen charity for the competition and at the announcement on Wednesday, last year’s SA Bachelor Wayne Stafford and Bachelorette Samantha Eaton revealed this year’s charity initiative.

“The finalists will also focus on community projects and outreach programs through a community outreach and upliftment initiative to assist in building a kinder and more tolerant nation. This initiative, known as the Talk Initiative, will focus on children in disadvantaged communities and in each of the finalist’s own community. We are hoping to continue with this initiative on an annual basis, building stronger leaders for tomorrow,” Wayne said.

After Bongi Madladla sang a few classic opera pieces and Karen Ferreira had the audience clapping to ABBA, Samantha went on to explain what the Talk Initiative is all about.

“Tolerance, appreciation, literacy and kindness (Talk) represent some of the core values, attitudes and skills you need in order to excel at anything. Unfortunately, a working knowledge of them does not come with the arrival of a newborn baby. It’s like getting a new toy and seeing that the batteries are not included in the toy box,” she said.

“Through this initiative we want to encourage and empower as many children as possible to develop these values, attitudes and skills.”

This year’s SA Bachelor and Bachelorette winners will be announced in November.
