Training show a glitzy event

The Western Riding Academy hosted the event where no glitter was spared.

On Sunday, 17 April, the Western Riding Academy hosted a Fantasy, Fiction and Fairy-Tale training show for horse riders at the Academy’s grounds in Sterkfontein.

Students competed in Western Pleasure, Western Dressage, Horsemanship, Trail and Reining classes while dressed up as fairy-tale characters. For some of the riders, this was their first riding show. Shows like this one are held as a judging exhibition of horses and ponies.

“We had riders dressed as Minnie Mouse, dragons, clowns, Zorro and fairies. Our instructors were dressed as the Nutty Professor, Olaf, and the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, although some of the younger children were confused and thought she was the Easter Bunny,” laughed Yolanda Steyn, the academy co-owner.

“Some of the parents also got into the spirit of things and dressed up too.”

The show, despite being training for the riders and horses, was a fun-filled event with the horses decorated with glitter. “One horse was even given a horn and turned into a unicorn!” Yolanda said.
