Seats rattled at Comedy Night
The West Rand Comedy Night saw veterans and new comedians take to the Centenary Hall stage.
On Friday (6 May) nationally acclaimed and local comedians shared the stage of the Centenary Hall and had the crowd in stitches all night.
The West Rand Comedy Night was the first of its kind and was hosted by Thanya Productions.
Owner Thanyani Marageni told the News she wanted to bring entertainment to the West Rand and encourage the locals to perform alongside professionals.
“This gives them exposure as local comedians,” she said.
One of the comedians, Mawaza, was born in Kagiso and is mentored by another Kagiso-born comedian, Tebogo Thobosi. Mawaza said he was born to be funny. After a school teacher had told him he should “make something of his naughtiness,” he decided to become a comedian.

Stages like the one on Friday night help local comedians, like Mawaza, to gain experience and exposure.
Well-known comedians Kedibone Mulaudzi, Chris Mopane and Thato Molamu graced the stage as well, poking fun at the audience and the politics of the day.
Even Northern Cape opera singer, Kgololo Polelo, took to the stage with his big voice to entertain the crowd throughout the night.
Thanyani said entertainment forms part of job creation and it is a good platform to gain confidence.
She promised that a similar event will be hosted in July.
