Police warns against hitchhikers
A resident was hijacked at gunpoint after offering a lift to a hitchhiking stranger.
A 34-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly stealing a vehicle following a hijacking incident earlier this month.
The complainant and his brother were travelling along Albertina Sisulu Road when they noticed an unknown man hitchhiking on 6 May.
“The complainant gave him a lift and they drove towards Tshepisong on an open space next to a cheese factory. While driving they noticed four suspects approaching. Two of the suspects approached and spoke to the hitch hiker while the other two suspects confronted the complainant,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya explained.
With a gun, the suspects pointed at the complainant and ordered him out of the vehicle.
The complainant and his brother were allegedly left tied-up in an open space as the suspects sped off in their white H100 Hyundai bakkie .
After the matter was reported to police, a 34-year-old suspect from Tshepisong was arrested on 9 May.
The suspect was traced and arrested a few days after the incident.
He has been charged with theft of motor vehicle and will appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court.
“Motorists and drivers of company trucks are once again warned not to be tempted to give lifts to strangers or be lured into believing that they are being hired to assist with transportation. The Hyundai H100 and Toyota Hilux bakkies are the most hijacked vehicles. Drivers need to take extra precautions when driving these type of vehicles and always keep their doors locked at all times,” Sibiya advises.
