Dros set for second Wednesday special
After the first Wednesday did not go over as smoothly, the family restaurant says its ready for the big rush tomorrow.
Two thousand burgers are being prepped, hundreds of litres of cider are chilling in the fridge and stacks of chips and onions rings are ready to be fried.
Tomorrow, staff and management of the Dros restaurant will tackle their second 20 Year Birthday Special Wednesday where you can grab a 200gr beef patty burger, chips, onion rings and a cider for only R20.
Last week Wednesday (11 May) was the first, chaotic, day of the special that will end on Wednesday, 1 June.
Owner Joey Warby told the News that the whole of Krugersdorp came out to the restaurant, which can only seat 340 people. It was no secret, chaos erupted shortly before 6pm as hundreds flocked to the restaurant, resulting in long lines and restless customers.
Some waited over two hours for their food to be served. Others gave up and went home.
Frustrated customers even took to Facebook, saying that the Dros failed in their attempt to host a birthday special. Warby apologised that some customers had to wait that long.
“But there is no such thing as bad publicity and this time we are ready,” he said.
Warby said last Wednesday he expected to sell 500 burgers, which is a lot more than he does on a good day. But by early afternoon last Wednesday, more than 500 burgers were already sold. By the end of the night, Dros sold 1 700 burgers to the public.
“We did not expect it. Such an amount is unheard of,” he said.
Warby eventually bought meat from the nearby fruit and vegetable shop to supply the growing demand.
All 16 chefs, 20 waiters, runners and all four managers will be on duty tomorrow to ensure that all goes over smoothly.
“We are unfortunately not taking any bookings for tomorrow,” Warby said.
