Everyone deserves to be a ‘princess for a day’
Three local women have become fairy godmothers to the girls of Krugersdorp.
After a midnight conversation, a group of women decided to join forces to help girls who cannot afford to go to their matric farewell functions.
With over two hundred dresses available, Madre Botha, Yolandi Pestana and Sharday van den Berg can cater for any occasion, style or size. They are also able to alter the dresses to ensure that everyone is able to wear the dress of their choice. But it doesn’t stop there. They also do hair and make-up, and provide accessories – they even have a photographer who will be available on the day.
So what’s the catch? They only help girls who cannot afford all the little things that go with a matric farewell, and all they ask for in return is that you enjoy the night and bring their dress back in one piece.
“A dress can cost anything from R550, you then have make-up which costs at least R350, hair which costs a minimum of R450, and last but not least, a manicure, which can cost up to R350 as well. And that excludes the cost of the ticket to the function,” Yolandi said.
This year is the first year they are creating awareness for what they are doing, and they urge the community to get involved. They have various drop-off points for donations and collect everything that might be needed for a matric farewell – from hair pins and hair spray, to dresses and accessories – every little bit helps.
“We don’t ever want to be in a situation where we have to turn anyone away, everyone deserves to feel like a princess,” Sharday says.
