Soccer tournament helps police address crime
Local police officials and the community team up against crime in Tarlton.
The Tarlton Police held the initial rounds of a soccer tournament on Thursday, 16 June at the Matshelapad informal settlement.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of, and educate the community about, hijackings and domestic violence, among other crimes.
Community members braved the cold weather to watch eight teams take each other on in a bid to be in the final leg of the tournament, which took place on Father’s Day, Sunday 19 June.

“The event was attended by approximately 500 people, most of whom were youngsters from the area around Tarlton,” said Constable Lucky Matome, spokesperson for the Tarlton Police Station.
At the tournament finals on Sunday, the Tarlton Drift Aces lost 2–1 to the Magicians. The Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit’s soccer team was knocked out of the tournament in the semi-finals.
The tournament is supported by the Department of Community Safety and Rem Brands.
