You can help save the bees

The bee population is in trouble ... but you can help.

A bee farmer from KwaZulu-Natal has taken it upon himself to help the bee population increase its size within the next five to seven years.

Johann Marx has been farming bees since 2010, and following the recent decline in the bee population, he wants to help it grow again. However, he cannot do it alone.

“I have nine hectares of land available in Lanseria where I can put 120 hives, and I have the bees for the hives, but I need the hives to put them in,” he said. He also has additional space in Kameelfontein for 120 hives.

He is urging members of the community to sponsor a hive, by either buying a Langstroth hive from Beequip or BeeWare, or donating money towards a hive.

He hopes to have the hives in place by 31 July, so that they are ready for the next nectar flow at the beginning of spring.
